Sock Hop!
The Good Samaritan Home Residents and Staff got a little crazy during National Nursing Home Week (May 10 to May 16). On Friday, May 15 we had a traditional Sock Hop. We had a DJ who played songs from the 50's and 60's and even dressed like Elvis. The crowd had a good time with the Chicken dance, Rocky Top and a lot of the Sock Hop line dance songs.
Sock hop is a term
coined in the 50s in the United States, following the growth in popularity of
rock and roll, to refer to informal sponsored dances at American high schools,
typically held on the grounds of the high school itself in the gymnasium or
cafeteria. Music was often played live.
It initially meant removing one's shoes and dancing on the dance floor shoeless
as athletic directors would demand that street shoes were removed to spare the
gym floors, which were expensive to build/maintain and usually proud features of
high schools at the time.
